When an employee works a shift that spans midnight — such as 10 PM to 7 AM — OneHRIS splits the hours at midnight. Each resulting segment is evaluated against the calendar date for its own holiday type, rest-day status, and night differential eligibility.

Example: Friday night into Saturday holiday

An employee works 10 PM Friday to 7 AM Saturday. Saturday is both a declared Regular Holiday and a scheduled rest day.

Friday portion (10 PM to 11:59 PM) — 2 hours:

  • Regular workday rate (Friday is an ordinary day)
  • Night differential applies: +10% on regular hourly rate

Saturday portion (12 AM to 7 AM) — 7 hours:

  • Regular holiday + rest day rate: 260% of the regular hourly rate
  • Night differential from 12 AM to 6 AM: +10% added to the 260% rate
  • Regular time from 6 AM to 7 AM: 260% only (outside night window)
Segment Hours Base rate Night diff
Fri 10 PM – midnight 2 100% +10%
Sat midnight – 6 AM 6 260% +10% on 260%
Sat 6 AM – 7 AM 1 260% None

How OneHRIS handles it

OneHRIS reads the employee's clock-in and clock-out times, splits at midnight, and evaluates each segment against the holiday calendar and the employee's rest day assignment for that calendar date. The computation is automatic — payroll does not require manual entries for cross-midnight work.

Manual Time Entry form for an employee showing Date, Time In 10:00 PM, Time Out 07:00 AM, Break Duration 1 hour, Total Hours Worked 8.00 hours — a night shift that crosses midnight

For the split to work correctly:

  • The biometric device or DTR upload must include the exact time-in and time-out (not just the date)
  • The holiday calendar must have the correct type (Regular or Special) for the Saturday date
  • The employee's work schedule must mark Saturday as a rest day

If a clock-out is missing for a cross-midnight shift, file a DTR correction for the time-out. See fix missing or wrong time logs.

Questions people ask

When does OneHRIS treat a punch as belonging to the next calendar day?

The split always happens at midnight (00:00). Hours before midnight belong to the starting date; hours from midnight onward belong to the next date.

What if the next day is a regular holiday?

The hours after midnight are paid at the regular holiday rate for that date, compounded with the rest-day rate if applicable. Night differential (10 PM to 6 AM) still applies on top of the holiday premium.

Does night differential apply across the midnight split?

Yes. The night differential window is 10 PM to 6 AM regardless of calendar date. Hours in that window on either side of midnight carry the 10% premium.
