Create a payroll group
A payroll group is a cutoff and pay-date schedule applied to a set of employees. Create one per cycle, plant or principal client to run separate payrolls and, when needed, to scope who can see them.
Available on Pro Enterprise
Open the page
Go to Settings, then Payroll, then Payroll Groups. The page lists every group with its code, frequency, cutoff schedule and daily rate divisor. A badge marks the default group.
If your plan has a cap, a notice at the top shows how many groups you can still create.
Create the group
- Select Add Payroll Group.
- Fill in Group Code, such as
PLANT-A, and Group Name, such asPlant A - Monthly. The code is uppercased on save. - Choose a Frequency: Semi-Monthly, Monthly or Weekly.
- For semi-monthly, set the two cutoffs: Coverage Start, Coverage End and Pay Day for each half. Turn on End of Month on cutoff 2 to pay on the last day of the month regardless of its length.
- Choose a Pay Date Adjustment for when the pay day lands on a weekend or holiday: Before, After or None.
- Optional: set a Daily Rate Divisor, such as 261 for a five-day week or 313 for a six-day week. Blank uses the company default.
- Tick Set as default group if new hires should land here, and Generate periods for the current year to create the pay periods now.
- Select Create Group.
The group appears as a card on the list. Select Periods to confirm the schedule looks right.
Separate attendance from basic pay
A plant that cuts attendance on a different window from basic pay can turn on Use Separate Cutoffs for Attendance/Absences in the group form. Set the attendance periods below the basic cutoffs. Overtime and incidents still follow the basic cutoff.
Assign employees to the group
Each employee's current contract carries the payroll group. On Create or Edit a contract, set Payroll Group to the right one. If you are moving many employees at once, open each contract and change the field; a contract's payroll group is a material field, so the usual contract edit rules apply.
New hires inherit the default group unless you change it on the Hire page.
Restrict access to the group
A group can be made confidential so that only named HR users and roles can see its payroll surface. See Restrict a payroll group to specific HR users.
Edit or delete
- Edit: the pencil icon on the card. Cutoff fields lock once any period in the group has been processed; the page shows a warning in that case. Name, description, pay-date adjustment and divisor stay editable.
- Delete: the trash icon. A group with processed periods cannot be deleted; one without is deactivated and no longer offered on new contracts.

Questions people ask
What is a payroll group used for?
Two things. First, it holds the cutoff schedule and pay dates for a set of employees. Second, it is the unit you restrict access to, so an HR officer can be scoped to a specific plant, cycle or principal.
How many payroll groups can I create?
Essential allows one. Pro and Enterprise are unlimited by default. The Payroll Groups page shows the current cap for your plan.
Can I change the cutoffs later?
Only until a period in the group has been processed. After that, the cutoff fields lock and the page tells you so. Name, description and pay-date adjustment stay editable.
What is the default group?
The group a new hire's contract defaults to on the Hire and Create Contract pages. Mark the group you use most as the default.
Can I delete a group?
A group with no processed periods can be deleted; it is deactivated and no longer offered on new contracts. A group with processed periods cannot be removed, because its periods, runs and payslips still need it.
